Water & Recycling

Catchment Water

Outside of the cities very few places on the Big Island have water supplied by the County and wells are adequate only near sea level.

Our water comes from rainwater gathered on the roof and fed to a storage tank. From the storage tank an electric pump and pressure tank supply our water. The rainwater itself is quite pure, but it is also filtered and sent through an ultraviolet filter.

Recycling

We recycle everything we can. The local Kea’au transfer station (where we take the garbage) includes a recycling center and a "reuse center." Glass, plastic, paper, metal and "green waste" are all accepted. Deposit bottles (HI5) can be returned there.

The reuse center is a place where used but useful items can be dropped off for others to take.
